Discussions with Atheists
First off, I need to preface this article with a few thoughts before beginning. This is not a hit piece article against atheists. I will not be trashing them or their lack of belief in deity. I have known, and do know atheists that are good moral people. However, time and time again I stumble across content on the internet where it’s religious people debating atheists. Or, atheists trashing religious people. Or, every possible combination of conflict that can be described. This site deals with the tough questions Christians have, and challenges they face. As a modern day Christian I have had many good debates with atheists and feel it is necessary to pass on some words of wisdom to my fellow Christians.
Arguing with an atheist will always be an eternal stalemate.
As a Christian you will find it hard to describe your feelings of being connected to God. You can cite every Bible verse you know. Most times an atheist that is good at debating will cite Bible verses to counter your points. At the end of the day you will not be able to prove the existence of God to an atheist. That might sound harsh, but it’s the truth. I am not saying that atheists never convert, because many do. It only comes from their personal experience with feeling God.
On the internet we share a collective space with human beings from across the globe. All races, religions, and belief systems are included in this space. Conflicts and arguments are bound to happen. Some Christians pass judgment on atheists. While some atheists mock and belittle Christians for their beliefs. I am not trying to play the victim here. I’ve seen atheists debate Christians, Muslim, Jewish, and all religions equally. It’s been my personal experience that these debates never yield positive results for either side.
Either one or both sides walk away upset and offended.
As Christians we are taught to spread the message of Jesus. That is not a bad thing. It’s commendable to preach the Gospel and save others. In this age of information it’s easier than ever before. But there is a difference between spreading the message of Jesus, and judging those that don’t want to hear it. It is not our job to pass judgment on anyone. On the other side, it is not fun being mocked or made fun of for our religious beliefs. There are some atheists that hold themselves intellectually superior over anyone that believes in God.
My final thoughts on atheists.
Don’t waste your time and energy justifying your beliefs. I no longer debate or argue with them on the internet or everyday life. They are entitled to their beliefs as much as we are. Most of them are familiar with the teachings of Christianity. You will not convert them by having an internet fight. If they ever convert it will be due to their own personal experiences. Be proud of your faith. Being a proud Christian does not mean you are ignorant or stupid. Be thankful for your blessings and show everyone the respect they deserve. Whether they share your beliefs or have no religious beliefs at all.
